Sleep, recovery and the barrier's repair window

The overnight hours are the longest uninterrupted stretch your skin gets, and also a period of relatively high water loss. What that means in practice, without the wellness claims.

The short answer

Overnight is the most useful window for barrier recovery, for two ordinary reasons. Skin temperature rises and water loss through the skin is generally higher in the evening and overnight than in the morning, so the driving force is high. And nothing is being washed off, rubbed off or reapplied for seven or eight hours, so anything that slows evaporation stays where you put it. That is the whole argument for a heavier application at night. Sleep also matters as a general condition of tissue repair, which is a modest claim and the only one we are prepared to make.

The daily rhythm

Skin is not in the same state at midnight as it is at nine in the morning. Skin temperature follows a daily pattern, blood flow to the skin changes across the day, and water loss through the skin follows a rhythm of its own, generally lower in the morning and higher in the evening and overnight.

We are stating this carefully because it is often inflated into claims about night creams that the underlying observation does not support. What the rhythm supports is a much simpler statement: overnight is a period during which your skin is losing water relatively fast into a room whose air you have probably heated.

That is an argument for putting something on it before you get into bed. It is not an argument for a different category of product, and it is certainly not an argument for a more expensive one.

Seven hours of nothing happening

The second reason the night matters has nothing to do with biology. It is that the night is the only long stretch in which you do not wash, wipe, rub, immerse or expose the skin to wind.

Consider what actually happens to an applied layer during a working day outdoors. It meets a hood, a collar, a glove, a towel, sweat, rain, salt, a steering wheel, a sandwich, four hand washes and a change of clothes. Very little of it is still there by mid afternoon. At night it is still there at six in the morning.

If you are going to be systematic about one application a day, that is the one to be systematic about. This is the least glamorous piece of advice in this publication and probably the most useful.

The bedroom is an exposure

Eight hours is a long exposure. If the room is heated and the air outside is cold, the air in that room is holding much less water than it could, and the gradient from your skin to the room is large for the whole night.

The controls here are unremarkable and they work. Heat the bedroom less. Do not sleep directly next to a heat source or a blowing vent. Do not sleep with a fan or an air conditioning unit blowing across your face, because moving air strips the boundary layer exactly as wind does outdoors.

The question of whether to add water to bedroom air is one where we are going to be plainer than most publications. Raising the humidity of a room does reduce the gradient, and that is real physics. It also introduces maintenance obligations, because a poorly maintained humidifier is an unpleasant thing to breathe next to for eight hours, and it can raise humidity to levels that cause condensation problems in a British house that is already prone to them. If you do it, do it with the room's ventilation and the building's condition in mind. We are not going to name a device or claim a number.

Sleep as a condition of repair

Here is where a publication has to decide how far to go, and we are going to stop early.

Tissue repair is a metabolic process. Sleep deprivation affects a very wide range of metabolic and immune processes, and it is entirely reasonable to expect that a person who is chronically short of sleep repairs tissue less well than the same person who is not. That is the claim, and it is a general one.

What we are not going to say is that a specific number of hours produces a specific barrier outcome, or that any measured skin variable responds to sleep in a way we can quantify for you. Those claims circulate widely and the evidence behind them is thinner than the confidence with which they are made.

The practical reading is this: if you are training or working hard outdoors in winter and sleeping badly, your skin is one of several things that will be slower to recover, and the fix is the sleep, not a product.

Stress, illness and the same caveat

The same restraint applies to stress. There are recognised relationships between psychological stress and several skin conditions, and there is a large research literature on it. What that literature does not support is the confident causal story that consumer writing tells.

Our position is that if your skin has changed markedly and at the same time you are ill, exhausted or under sustained strain, that is worth mentioning to a clinician rather than solving with a purchase. And if a skin change is persistent, spreading or itchy enough to disturb sleep, it belongs with a GP or a pharmacist regardless of what else is going on.

A realistic night routine

For someone who has been in cold water that day, the useful shape is short. Get the salt off with the minimum wash that achieves it. Do not use hot water at the end of the day if you can bear not to. Apply while still slightly damp, generously, to the sites that are actually failing: hands, face, lips, and anywhere a seam sat. Cover the hands if they are cracked and you can tolerate it.

Then leave it alone for eight hours. That is the intervention.

Common questions

Is there any point using a different product at night?

The useful difference is weight, not category. At night you can tolerate something heavier and greasier than you would wear to work, and heavier formulations slow water loss more. That is the whole of it. The word night on a label carries no information about how well something performs.

Should I put something on before bed even if my skin feels fine?

If you have been in cold water or cold wind that day, yes. Skin that feels fine in the evening is frequently skin that will feel tight at six the next morning, because the loss happens overnight. Acting before the symptom is cheaper than acting after it.

Does a humidifier help winter skin?

Raising the water content of the air reduces the vapour pressure gradient from your skin to the room, so in principle yes. In practice it needs maintaining, and in a British house that is already prone to condensation it can create a different problem. Heating the room less achieves part of the same effect with no equipment.

How much does poor sleep actually matter for skin?

Enough to be worth fixing and not enough to be quantified here. Repair is a metabolic process and chronic sleep deprivation affects metabolic and immune function broadly. Claims that attach specific skin measurements to specific hours of sleep are more confident than the evidence supporting them.

My skin is worse on one side of my face. Why?

The commonest ordinary explanations are asymmetric airflow, such as a vent, a fan or a window, and asymmetric pressure or friction, such as sleeping on one side. Look at the exposure before looking at the skin. If a one sided change is persistent or looks unlike simple dryness, get it looked at rather than reasoned about.
